Guest Blog - Dan Erickson

Dan Erickson is new to our teaching team and also our new Executive Leadership Counsel.

I was filling up my tank the other day and I began to think about all those people who really can’t afford to pay $4 a gallon for gas (including me). I also just got off the phone with a friend whose house is being auctioned off tomorrow. He is homeless, barely able to feed his family! A year ago he owed his own business. It is all gone!

“Do people really matter?” How about the people who have lost jobs, mates, children, finances, relationships and even their faith? Do these matter to God and to you? God’s word tells us that people are at the top of his priority list.

Knowing this causes me to view people differently. This summer, I challenge you to view those around you through a new set of lenses. Seek to meet them where they are and to share God’s love in a tangible way. Are they working in the yard? Share a cool glass of lemonade or help them trim their shrubs. Be sensitized to ways we can touch others with God’s love.

It’s the little things in life that mean the most. We know everyone’s finances are challenged. Because of this, I’d like to make a proposition. This month, because we need to care about people, I am suggesting that each of us give a $10-20 gas card to someone who really needs it. It is an investment in giving our lunch just like the little boy in John 6. He gave what he had and Jesus multiplied it.

I know that this gift may not seem like much, but neither was that boy’s five small barley loaves and two fish. Let’s see what happens when we spread a little of God’s love and generosity around. Send an e-mail to let us know what happens. Remember, little becomes much when we place it in God’s hands. I am excited to see what God will do through you.
