Prostituting your Vision

Recently God has brought me to an understanding of what I've done over the last few years in leadership. I began to prostitute the vision that God gave me. What is a prostitute? Here's what dictionary.com defines as a prostitute.

1. a woman who engages in sexual intercourse for money; whore; harlot.
2. a man who engages in sexual acts for money.
3. a person who willingly uses his or her talent or ability in a base and unworthy way, usually for money.–verb (used with object)
4. to sell or offer (oneself) as a prostitute.
5. to put to any base or unworthy use: to prostitute one's talents.

I actually began to see who would buy into the vision I had even if it meant many times having to tweak and change it to fit them. I got caught up in 'people pleasing' and this is a dangerous place to be.

Let's talk reality church planters, pastors and church leaders. How many times have you taken what God wanted you to do and then got with others and tried to please them by changing what God had originally showed you? Perry Noble talked about what people really mean when they say certain things. Check it out here. Make sure you check out the link before reading on to gain a true understanding of what pastors are up against.

As I look back on the past five years, here's the kicker. All the people that I have sold myself to like a prostitute are no longer around. They are gone.

It hit me a few weeks ago when I was in Atlanta that God is ALWAYS going to be with me, but most of the people in my life will not always be with me. I was acting like God wasn't going to be with me forever but people were. I took the scripture that says "I am with you always" and acted like that was a promise from people and not God.

I have tried to change for people that are consumer "Christians" and they are no longer around. I made some bad leadership moves because of people. That was not a good move.

Here's what God has been teaching me through my mentors. When people become so BIG in your world God becomes small. BUT when God becomes BIG it makes people small. I am rededicating myself to ONLY PLEASING GOD and not man.

Bottom line Pastors and leaders, how long will you continue to sell your vision to what I call vision whores?
