My youngest son is in Kindergaten at Kentucky Trails Elementary School. I went to his school Monday to have lunch with him. As I walked into the school I noticed that things were different. The staff was dressed professionally, the building was exceptionally clean and as I walked into the office the staff greeted me as I signed in. Then I said, "I'm a little early so I am going to slipped down to my sons class as I've always done at other schools where my kids have attended. The secretary was nice but firm and said, "Dr. Bachmeier frowns on parents doing that because it interrupts the class. What we would like for you to do is sit here in the office and wait til your son goes to lunch." Not a big deal right! Wrong, not in a bad way but Dr. Bachmeier has created a culture, a DNA in her staff. I haven't talked with her about this but I'm guessing here are a few of the values/DNA that she wants instilled in her staff.
1. An exceptionally clean environment.
2. Professional staff.
3. Follow my spoken expectations.
I used this example with our staff and explained how important it is that we begin to develop some values as a leadership team and that I wanted to instill in each of you the DNA I want to see in our leadership. Last night we started with 'Be an Armorbearer.' 1 Samuel 16:21 says, "And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his Armorbearer."
We talked about every staff member becoming an Armorbearer for the vision God has given us as a local church. Over the next few weeks I am going to write about what an Armorbearer looks like. I would encourage you to read 1 Samuel 16 to gain a deeper knowledge of what Armorbearers are.
If you are a church planter and getting started, I want to save you of heartache and encourage you to develop Armorbearers around you.
